Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh

Kalamkari is the art of painting on cloth with a ‘kalam’ (pen). Traditionally these paintings were used to decorate temples as a backdrop in the sanctum behind the idols.  The main themes are inspired by mythological stories and from nature.

The artist laboriously primes the cloth using materials such as milk and tree sap. Then the design is outlined with a bamboo pen before it is filled with colourful natural dyes.
