Gond from Madhya Pradesh

The Gonds are a tribal community from Madhya Pradesh, Central India. They traditionally decorate the mud walls of their homes with this art using charcoal, cow dung, leaves and soil. Today they have innovated to use a variety of materials including acrylic and ink on paper to create vibrantly coloured paintings.

These paintings are drawn from their folklore and show the tribes’ close relationship with nature through depictions of birds, animals, sea creatures and the creator.
